FRAMEWORK
Northern Portugal–Castile and León region is home to a rich underground cultural heritage. Despite its potential for sustainable tourism and education, these assets often remain overlooked and underutilised. This presents significant challenges for their conservation, management and promotion among the wider public.
Digital technologies, including remote sensing, hyperspectral imaging, advanced sensing and robotics, offer significant potential to support the detection, assessment, monitoring and conservation of underground cultural heritage.
Building on these technologies, the Under Heritage project aims to develop an innovative integrated system that combines advanced digital technologies for the detection, monitoring and conservation of underground heritage, ensuring its preservation and enhancement through intelligent, data-driven decision-making strategies.
PROPOSED SOLUTION
Integrate multiple data sources, including 3D surveying using LiDAR, remote sensing, hyperspectral and multispectral imaging, IoT sensors, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and autonomous robotic platforms, enabling the systematic acquisition of data in hard-to-access underground environments.
This approach will enable a comprehensive assessment of the structural condition and environmental status of underground heritage assets, supporting preventive, evidence-based management.
The collected data will be integrated into an intelligent digital platform capable of aggregating, visualising and analysing information from multiple sources, providing decision-support tools for the monitoring, underground heritage conservation and management .
In parallel, the solution will enhance the tourism and educational value of these assets through digital representations and immersive experiences.
CCG/ZGDV CONTRIBUTION
CCG/ZGDV contributes to the development of the solution's most advanced digital components, bringing its expertise in digital twins, artificial intelligence, decision-support systems, data analysis and visualisation, BIM technologies, and virtual and augmented reality to the project.
The main activities include:
- Development of methodologies for the structural and geometric characterisation of underground heritage, as well as the intelligent integration and exploitation of data generated by different acquisition technologies, contributing to the creation of high-precision digital models and the implementation of advanced analysis and monitoring mechanisms.
- Development of the integrated digital platform, including the design of data models, intelligent algorithms and visualisation tools to facilitate the interpretation of collected information and support decision-making by heritage management authorities.
CCG/ZGDV's experience gained through European projects dedicated to the digitalisation and conservation of cultural heritage, including HeritageCARE, Muralla Digital and EDIT, will enable the transfer of knowledge and best practices to the specific context of underground cultural heritage, fostering innovative solutions that contribute to its preservation, sustainable management and long-term enhancement.
