On 20 November, the CCG/ZGDV Institute will host the fourth edition of CPES SERIW – Software Engineering Research & Innovation Workshop. This event brings together distinguished experts to discuss emerging challenges in Software Engineering. This year’s edition focuses on the theme “Defence and Dual Use in Software Engineering”, highlighting the growing relevance of these issues across academic, scientific, technological, and political contexts.

Education and Training in the Spotlight at the First Round Table

The first round table, held at 2:45 p.m., will address the educational dimension of Defence and Dual Use, bringing to the discussion topics such as ethics in teaching, professional frameworks, academic standards, the design of training programmes, and new teaching and learning methods. The panel will be moderated by Pedro Ribeiro (UMinho/DSI and CCG/ZGDV). It will feature contributions from Manuel João Costa (Pro-Rector of UMinho), Margarida Melo (AIS.SC), Nuno Nunes (Portuguese Engineers’ Association – Computer Engineering College), Alexandre Ferreira da Silva (UMinho), and Marta Santos Silva (JusGov and UMinho).

Research, Technology, and Public Policy at the Core of the Scientific Discussion

The second round table, at 5:15 p.m., will focus on the scientific dimension, debating priority themes for research and development, emerging technologies, organisational challenges faced by R&D entities, and the role of national and European policies in strengthening the sector. Moderated by Francisco J. Duarte (UMinho/DSI and CCG/ZGDV), it will include the participation of João Barbas (National Defence Institute), Ricardo J. Machado (UMinho/DSI and CCG/ZGDV), Nuno Nunes (IP Setúbal and CCG/ZGDV), Filipe Martins (Ports Administration of Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo), Raul Fangueiro (UMinho and Fibrenamics), and Carlos Oliveira Silva (Rear Admiral (RES), Portuguese Navy).

Continued Commitment to Advancing Software Engineering

The November 2025 edition reinforces CCG/ZGDV’s commitment to promoting informed debate and knowledge sharing among academia, industry, and public institutions, contributing to the consolidation of Software Engineering as a strategic area for national technological development.

The event will take place in the Altamiro Machado Auditorium, at the CCG/ZGDV facilities, bringing together researchers, professionals, and institutional representatives for a moment of joint reflection on the future of Defence, Dual Use, and Software Engineering in Portugal.
