NEP-UM – cognitive training platform

2010-2012

The NEP-UM is a cognitive training platform, developed in the scope of the project "Cognitive Training in Brain Disorders: Effectiveness of cognitive stimulation and development of a new tool for Portuguese clinicians”, for professionals and patients involved in the process of cognitive rehabilitation.

The tool was developed based on the most recent evidences concerning the theoretical and technical knowledge of cognitive therapy, applied in the context of different neurological and psychiatric disorders (for example, Alzheimer’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, CVA, cerebral encephalic traumatism, Williams Syndrome, etc.).

The platform consists of exercises and cognitive and behavioral strategies, characterized by structured cognitive training and designed to improve the functioning in specific areas of cognition: memory, attention, language and executive functions.

The NEP-UM platform allows:

  • Prescription of sessions and specific exercises for the patient by the therapist.
  • Monitoring the performance throughout the activities, as well as the elaboration of reports for the assistant therapist;
  • Accessing exercises specifically adapted to the individual needs of the patient.

In the long run, the platform can also be seen as a strategic prevention tool towards a healthier aging, or be implemented in Schools to bridge the gap of attention, considered one of the main causes of school failure.
