COMPUTER VISION, INTERACTION AND GRAPHICS

cVIG is the CCG Institute’s domain of applied research in computer vision, interaction and graphics. This domain conducts its activities towards developing innovation solutions in all application areas like health, industry, entertainment, education and services.

Currently, cVIG is devoted to the applied research and development of software and hardware based solutions, in a permanent cooperation with CCG industrial partners.

The main activities of research and development are:

. Computer Vision and Graphics Algorithms for software and hardware systems:

Artificial systems solutions that extract information from images. As a technological discipline, computer vision seeks to apply its theories and models to the construction of computer vision systems. Examples of applications developed in computer vision are 1) Detecting events (e.g. for visual surveillance or people counting – counting people in a bus); 2) Organizing information (e.g. for indexing databases of images and image sequences – urban sensors); 3) Modeling objects or environments (e.g. medical image diagnostic and 3d reconstruction modeling  - diabetic retinopathy diagnostic); 4) Interaction (e.g., as the input to a device for computer-human interaction – multi-touch table, interactive displays); 5) Controlling processes (e.g., an industrial robot – automation of process).

Examples of projects in this area: AAL4ALL [+]; Sonda Urbana [+]; Lincis Tráfego [+]; AMI Conta [+]; DIAGRDIA; MICABCAD; topic shoe.

. Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality:

Technological solutions of augmented reality and virtual reality. The AR is an area of computer graphics that allows the introduction of the concept of mixed reality in daily lives. It is obtained by simultaneous visualization of synthetic visual objects (which are generated with the aid of the computer) with the real ones. In turn, the RV recreates the feeling of reality for an individual, through the use of technological devices that allow the user interaction with a fictional environment.

Examples of projects in this area: VRINMOTION [+]; PT21 [+]; Ciência Viva – Túnel; Ciência Viva - Assistentes Virtuais; COGNITO [+]

. Natural User Interface and interactive based solutions:

Technological solutions that provide a support to the activities of people and create experiences that enhance and extend the way people work, communicate and interact. These solutions becomes evident by the exploitation of the whole human body to perform interaction actions with a system, either through moving the body, either through the touch and even gestures.

Examples of projects in this area: Multi-touch Table [+]; MUPI interactive; PT21 [+]; SEGURTEC
